Welcome to the Scotts Head Community Garden!
Welcome to the Scotts Head Community Garden!
Located adjacent to Number 1 West Street, our garden is a vibrant hub for the Scotts Head community. The initiative began in mid-2019 when a local survey revealed that 70% of residents supported the idea of establishing a community garden. Driven by dedicated committee members George and Elizabeth Driussi, the project took shape with a steering group formed during our inaugural meeting in March 2021.
Development Timeline
- 2021: Secured a $15,000 grant from the Foundation for Rural Regional Renewal (FRRR) in November, allowing us to begin the establishment of our garden.
- 2022: Clearing of the site started early in the year, with the planting of bananas and citrus trees, followed by the construction of garden beds made from repurposed materials. Our first vegetable plantings took place in June, and by August, we had installed a donation box that has raised over $2,500 to support our ongoing efforts.
Our Garden Today
With over 60 members and regular working bees attracting enthusiastic gardeners, the Scotts Head Community Garden operates entirely organically. We focus on sustainable practices, using only plant-based insect deterrents.
Features of the Garden
- Art and Sculpture: The garden showcases beautiful overhead artworks designed by local artist Libby Carter, along with unique metal sculptures created by George.
- Community Spaces: Thanks to the Stuarts Point Men’s Shed, we have a picnic table and seating areas for gatherings.
- Water Supply: We utilize a 1,300-litre tank complemented by a 2,000-litre tank, both filled from local roofs.
