Scotts Head to Macksville Bike and Walking Connection Proposal

Introduction

We are excited to support efforts to create a safe bicycle and walking connection between Scotts Head and Macksville. This initiative aims to enhance recreational opportunities, promote community health, and stimulate local economic growth by providing a safe and scenic route for cyclists and walkers.

The Importance of Outdoor Recreation

Recreational walking is the most popular activity in New South Wales, with a participation rate of 43% in 2023. Cycling also enjoys significant popularity, with 11% of NSW residents engaging in this activity. The health benefits of outdoor exercise are well-documented, and there is an increasing demand for accessible pathways and trails. Connecting our communities through a bike an walking path will not only improve physical health but also foster social connections and create a vibrant outdoor culture.

Local Community Support

A recent local community survey supported by the Scotts Head Community Group in early 2024 highlighted strong support for the bike and walking connection idea, with 978 respondents advocating for a feasibility study to assess the project. Key local organisations, including Reflections Holidays, Club Scotts, and Macksville Country Club, have also expressed their enthusiasm and support for this initiative

The potential benefits are significant and include:

  • Community health: Encouraging outdoor activities improves overall well-being.

  • Tourism and economic boost: A dedicated, safe bike and walking path can attract visitors, benefiting local businesses.

  • Strengthened connections: The path will enhance social ties within the community, promote an active lifestyle, and create opportunities for people to learn more about the landscape, culture and history of the area.

Additionally, the project could build on existing infrastructure, such as the Macksville to Nambucca cycleway and Jacks Ridge Mountain Bike Park, positioning our region as a premier destination for outdoor recreation.

Feasibility and Planning

We think that the proposal is certainly achievable, but it needs to be carefully planned, and it won’t be quick to implement. A comprehensive feasibility study is needed to evaluate potential route options and address challenges such as:

  • Land tenure: ensuring the connection is located on appropriate land.

  • Environmental impact: avoiding areas of ecological and cultural importance while maximising community benefits.

  • Cost considerations: analysing both construction and ongoing maintenance costs.

  • Business Case Development: Creating a sustainable model for funding and support.

Conclusion

While there are challenges ahead, starting the process now is vital. A feasibility study supported and led by Nambucca Valley Council is the crucial first step in transforming this vision into reality. We aim to engage with the new Council as soon as possible after the September 2024 local government elections to seek their support and get the work underway.

Together, we can create a safe, enjoyable, and sustainable connection between Scotts Head and Macksville that benefits our community for years to come.
