Regeneration of Scotts Head Crown Reserve

Regeneration of Scotts Head Crown Reserve

Reflections Holiday Park Manager Jacki Middleton is pleased to announce that Reflections have been successful in securing funds from the Crown Reserve Improvement Fund to restore and maintain the vegetation and infrastructure across the Scotts Head Reserve.  The funds will be used to extend the current work being conducted by local bush regeneration experts Ecolinx who residents may have seen doing some great work around the headland and other areas since April.  Congratulations to the Reflections Team for successfully securing the grant funding and their ongoing commitment to the health and upkeep of our beautiful coastal reserve.  Justin, Ecolinx team leader, kindly provided the following report on what he and his team have been up to these past couple of months.

Ecolinx project update 27th June 2025

The Ecolinx Bush Regeneration team commenced primary weed control throughout the Crown Reserve at the end of April. Over the past couple of months the team has targeted woody weeds & vine weeds from Elephant Head to the Point and along the dunes to West Street. Lantana, Ochna & Senna has been removed, the vine weed Mile- a- Minute is dominant throughout the project area smothering the canopy of the littoral rainforest with a severe patch near the playground treated. An outbreak of Mothvine near the southern viewing platform at the Point was also contained. Other weeds targeted that are spreading throughout the reserve are Painted Spurge, Ground Asparagus, Brazilian Cherry, Giant White Bird of Paradise and Cocos Palms. A couple of large Giant White Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia nicolai) have been injected and will be left in situ, there is also a Brazilian Cherry halfway down the stairs at Little Beach that is producing a lot of fruit, this will also be removed. Spot spraying of the exotic grasses Broad Leaf Paspalum and Torpedo grass is planned, Trad and other exotic ground covers including a few garden escapees in the hind dunes will occur over the next few weeks. Mother of Millions in the foredunes will be targeted as well.

Of interest is a couple of threatened flora species identified whilst undertaking the work. Siver Bush (Sophora tomentosa) was located in the hind dunes adjacent to the caravan park and Plectranthus cremnus identified at the base of Elephant Head.
